My Reiki experience…

I’m pretty sure everyone has heard of meditation, yoga and the seven chakras (though it might be a very vague understanding, i’m sure you’ve heard the terms). BUT have you heard of Reiki? I used to hear the word Reiki and I’d automatically get the mental image of a hippie dude with dreadlocks in a really dark, dingy room doing some form of spiritual healing which actually sounds kinda creepy if you ask me, anyone else get something along those lines?

Reiki
noun.
a healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being.

Theres no denying that Reiki is a spiritual kind of experience, and I really believe that you have to be open to the idea in order to benefit from the treatments. There’s no point turning up as a sceptic susan, because although you might still gain benefits from the session, you aren’t going to notice them if you aren’t willing to accept them. So everyone, its time take a deep breath and broaden our minds for the rest of this read.

Back in December I had the pleasure to meet Kelly Marie, a health and wellness coach in the North Yorkshire area. While I was with her, she was telling me a little bit about Reiki which is something she had trained in. I was absolutely fascinated by it and eventually got booked in for a session to try it out.

We are alive because life force is flowing through us. Life force flows within the physical body though pathways called chakras. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. Life force nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away. Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.- Kelly Marie.

I asked Kelly-Marie a few questions after our last session to help us all understand this healing a little better.

Kelly-Marie

I am Kelly-Marie, 30 years old. I was a medic in the army for 10 years, serving in Afghanistan. Married, no children yet, but 2 dogs.

Fitness and Wellness Coach in North Yorkshire. I am a personal trainer, specialising in Pilates, sports massage and Reiki. I am here to help people find happiness and peace using physical fitness and reiki.

How did you discover reiki?

I first discovered reiki when I was going through a period of depression (one of many) and I felt I required some help relaxing. Counselling wasn’t working for me so I wanted to try an alternative therapy. Personally, reiki helped me switch off my very busy mind for an hour and relax my tense body.

What does it mean to you?

To me Reiki is now apart of my everyday life. Whether I am receiving, giving or being mindful.

This might sound dramatic, but Reiki changed my life. I was an uptight, stressed, anxious person who saw the world very negatively. I felt everything was out to get me and nothing would ever go right for me. I knew I needed to make a change to my life or I would never find happiness and live life to the full.

I feel like a new person, I am grateful for my past and reflect on it regularly. I feel my experiences make me good at helping others who require some support in one way or another.

Is it a physical or mental benefit?

I feel reiki can be broken into physical, mental, emotional and spiritual benefits.

On a physical level, Reiki supports the body’s natural ability to heal itself, helping to release blockages, toxins, and relieve pain. Getting in touch with natural healing energy, Reiki can also help you to make better choices in your nutrition, become more aware and in tune with your body, helping you to develop greater awareness of your body’s needs.

On a mental level, Reiki energy can help you to witness your thoughts and negative patterns. Once you become aware of your thoughts, you have the power to change them. This is not about positive thinking, this is about learning about your thoughts and becoming aware of your thoughts, so you can consciously make a decision whether the thoughts are serving you or not.

On an emotional level, Reiki can help you get in touch with the depths of your emotions and can help you to transform whatever energy you would like to transform. Reiki can help you cultivate more positive emotions, such as love, compassion, kindness, connection, sharing, intimacy and more.

On a spiritual level, Reiki can help you to love and accept yourself. To have self-compassion and compassion for others. It can help you to connect with the divine and help you to feel that you are a part of something larger.

Who do you think will benefit from Reiki?

I think anyone can benefit from reiki. Whether you are searching for help or just want some time to yourself. Reiki can support many illnesses, from chronic pain to depression. It assists in the bodies unseen “life force energy” which flows through you. If your “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

My Experience

When I arrived at my first session I was a little nervous, I had absolutely no idea what to expect and it felt really difficult to relax at first. When Kelly-Marie asked if I had any particular reason for trying reiki out, I didn’t really have a reason. Like a lot of people,  I do struggle to sleep on a night and have a tendency (also like most people) to over think things and pick at my worries, however, on a whole I’m a very positive person and really try to look after myself. So really, I just wanted to see what it was like!

We chatted for a long time before actually going into the relaxation room for the treatment and it was so nice just talking to somebody new and learning about their story. When I first got on the bed it was very strange! I wasn’t really sure I was supposed to be thinking about or doing until I realised that I wasn’t ‘supposed’ to be thinking about anything- It was time to let my mind drift to wherever it wanted to.

Trying to describe the experience is like trying to describe a dream- you know, those dreams that seemed totally normal in your head and then when you actually tell somebody out loud and it sounds completely ridiculous? Well, its one of them!

I could see the night sky. A midnight blue colour with bright, glowing stars everywhere and swirling colours. When we reached my legs I got goosebump sensations which seemed to radiate over me on a loop and at some point I actually fell asleep in the treatment. It was incredibly relaxing and I slept AMAZING that night.

I wanted to test the science of reiki, so using my watch I recorded my heart rate over the day. On my journey to the second session my heart rate was running at 83 BPM (I was stuck in the stress traffic and in a mega rush) during the session my heart dropped down to 70 and then further down to 60 and got to a low of 56 BPM at my most relaxed point in the session. I think that shows just how relaxing reiki can be. Its so easy to run life at 100 miles a second and not let our bodies and minds catch up sometimes- its time we gave them both a bit of good ol’ TLC.

In my second session I relaxed much faster, the sensations were similar with goosebumps and random surges of heat. Kelly-Marie used a musical vibrations instrument which gave the strangest feeling- the sound almost felt like I was underwater and the vibration were actually inside me and all around me at the same time. I felt so relaxed and present that I couldn’t remember what was happening when it stopped.

For anyone wondering, I have been sleeping pretty well recently- A LOT better than the habits I was stuck in a few months ago. But what I’ve gained the most from my reiki sessions is the gratitude towards myself and a little bit of mindfulness which I’ve been lacking recently and, without sounding like a big fat cliche, I feel a lot more aware and at peace with myself.

A little note…

I ABSOLUTELY love what Kelly-Marie said about learning to love yourself and accept you for YOU. This is why I really think that everyone could benefit from some time to reflect and just feel present.

Life is only as good as your mindset, so be happy and forget the rest.
